Mardi Gras continued
The season begins for many people on January 6th when king cakes are served during the feast of Epiphany, a holiday commemorating the day three Wise Men arrived from the East to honor the Christ child. King cakes are circular pastries usually decorated in the Mardi Gras colors (green, gold, and purple). The season starts approximately two weeks before Fat Tuesday. During those two weeks, parades can be viewed nightly and on weekends. Almost all businesses are closed for Lundi Gras (Fat Monday) and for Mardi Gras itself. People all over the world go to New Orleans to enjoy this extravagant holiday... about 3 million. It generates approximately $3 billion.
Interesting Tidbits
Did you know that Mobile, Alabama has a very old Mardi Gras tradition? Cajuns, an ethnic group that derives its culture from the French Canadian refugees who settled in southwestern Louisiana during the 18th century, still maintain distinctive Mardi Gras traditions.
