Summary
Hmmm… an interesting question with a two-fold answer. Let's consider first the definition of a Christian.
A Christian is someone who has accepted Jesus Christ as Lord of their life and has, therefore, made the conscious decision to follow His example and teachings. That being said, the answer to the question is "no", you do not have to belong to a local church in order to become a Christian. HOWEVER, in order to remain a Christian, you DO have to find a church home.
The Crux of the Matter
Becoming a Christian
There is not one "fixed" path that leads people to Christianity. The Lord knows us intimately, just as parents know their children. He has designed a unique course for all who ultimately come to know Him, and that course does not always involve a preacher and a sermon. In the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4), approximately 120 people were filled with His spirit.
Remaining a Christian
Living in a world full of distractions, emphasis on material possessions, and various temptations at every turn, it is absolutely necessary that Christians spend time together (Hebrews 10:25). Jesus Himself established and attended churches, knowing they would be vital to the continuation of the Christian community.
